Construction of 1km of a new single carriageway (two running lanes) with two signalised grade junctions and underpass structure, constructed immediately adjacent to a live light rail corridor including rail station and secondary school.
Project Overview
Our works comprised the construction of a 1km two-lane carriageway with cycle ways along with a 1.3km surface and foul water drainage scheme including an attenuation system one meter in diameter, 1.9km of reinforced concrete retaining walls varying in height from 2.2m to 3.6m including an imprinted concrete finish, diversions of electricity (public lighting) and fibre optics cables, and the laying of new ducting. The link road is bound on the eastern side by the live LUAS rail corridor and an adjoining station. Part of the project required the construction of an underpass structure to allow safe pedestrian access and egress from the existing station and an adjoining secondary school.
Extensive bulk earthworks were carried out including deep cuttings in a brownfield environment and the excavation of 40,000m³ of soil. All excavation and disposal activities were in accordance with EA Regulations for Asbestos.
The high traffic volumes around the existing industrial estate necessitated the requirement for an alternative link road to divert traffic and alleviate congestion in the area, while improving the quality of life for local residents.
All works were completed safely with no reportable accidents.
