Battery Powered Tower Cranes

In line with our Sustainability Roadmap, we have recently completed a trial with our partner Aggreko to run our tower cranes on an Aggreko generator and battery pack hybrid model. The use of diesel in our industry is one of our biggest challenges as we seek to cut carbon emissions and generator powered tower cranes are often unavoidable. However, this solution means that the generator runs for only 15-20% of the standard time, with a battery pack running the crane for the remaining 80-85% of the time. This results in a significant reduction in emissions which is further reduced by use of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in place of diesel.

In our trial, we were seeing a daily reduction in fuel usage by over 150litres per day which would equate to almost 100 tons of carbon per year. This trial was the first of its kind by Aggreko in Ireland and while very suitable for running towers cranes, it can be applied generally to generator use.
