Refurbishment and faithful restoration works to the 18th Century Grade 2 listed Wivenhoe House, providing fine dining, private function areas and luxury suites. Also included as part of this contract is a 3,550 sq.m new build extension of 40 exclusive double bedrooms, restaurant and conference facilities to the Edge Hotel.
Project Overview
The Edge Hotel project is a luxury 4-star country house hotel that provides world class hospitality training at the University of Essex.
The project involved the refurbishment and faithful restoration works to the 18th century Grade 2 listed Wivenhoe House to create a new 4-star 40-bedroom hotel. The three-storey building is complete with traditional ornate plastered ceilings, lathe and plastered walls and ornate joinery finishes in areas. The works included the demolition of a 1970’s bedroom wing and the construction of a new build extension with 28 exclusive double bedrooms, restaurant and conference facilities, and associated landscaping.
The conservation works required close liaison with English Heritage to agree the extent of the refurbishment works, methods of protection for listed features, and methods of restoration for existing damaged elements of the building.
All works were carried out within the live university campus and the project received a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
